Before your session

What to wear

One of the most asked questions when preparing for a photo session is "What should we wear?" Since these photos will last a lifetime, you want to make sure your entire family looks good. At the same time, you want everyone to look like themselves.

  • First and foremost, dress in something you’re comfortable in! The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable you’ll look in your photos.
  • Moms, try to pick your outfit first and build the rest of your family off of that.
  • Dress for the location and weather. If we’ll be running along the sand, go barefoot; walking in the woods, closed toed shoes are the best choice. If the weather will be hot and humid, light, breathable clothing is recommended.
  • Choose 1-2 simple patterns or 2-3 different colors in a color scheme. Mix in patterns with solids to balance out the photo. Bright colors, especially ones that flirt with neon shades, don’t photograph well. Earthy, jewel, neutral, blush, and pastel tones photograph well.
  • I frequently recommend clothing with movement – think flowy dresses, skirts, or scarves. These add a beautiful visual element to your photos.
  • Try to avoid clothing with distracting logos or words, and very thin stripes or small repeating patterns, as they can cause unwanted visual effects in your photos.
  • Blowouts and accidents happen. I recommend arriving a few minutes early and dressing children in their final session outfit at arrival. Keep in mind most locations will not have changing rooms.
